Alaior is celebrating these days the fiestas for Sant Llorenç,
a very important date in the festive calendar of this Menorcan town, where
all the chivalrous tradition of the island is reproduced.
On Friday, August 8, Pere Alzina Seguí will read the proclamation
of the fiestas. Then the Mayor will give the flag of Sant Llorenç
to the "caixers" and, with the sound of the drum and the flute, the flag
will be carried to the
Town Hall where
all the neighbours will be invited to a cocktail. Finally there will be
a big show including music and dance.
On Saturday, August 9, in the morning the protocol events will continue
with the invitation of the "caixers i cavallers". At 4.45 p.m. the giants
will visit the village and there will be a grate street parade, the cocktail
"Gin des poble" and the reading of the poems "versos caragols". At 6 p.m.
The Music Band of Es Migjorn Gran will start walking towards the Sant Pere
Nou church, where the religious "solemnes completas" will take place. Once
finished, the traditional party known as the "Jaleo" will start in Sa Plaça,
with the music of de band Nura and the horse performances by the "caixers
i cavallers". Finally there will be the official reception at the Town
Hall, and as from midnight there will be music and dance.
On Sunday, August 10, at from 9 a.m. the street parade will start again
and at 11 a.m. there will be the traditional mass "Missa des Caixers",
followed again by the "Jaleo" at Sa Plaça. At night the "cavallers"
and the horses will perform offering the visit of the "aigua-ros". The
programme for Sunday will end up with folk, street parades and dancing.
On Monday, August 11, the last day of the fiestas, there will be, amongst
other activities, horse races as from 6 p.m., dancing with group Huracan
and "Nit de Rock" with the local Firmamento, Les Pure Tones and Purple
Haze.
