The calendar for horse fiestas in Menorca continues and on Sant Bartomeu
the "jaleos" reach Ferreries. The festive programme began some days ago
but the most outstanding and traditional part of the programme are the
events that will take place on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24, that follow a
strict order starring the horses.
On Saturday 23 at noon, the Sant Bartomeu flag will be handed over to
the "caixer sobreposat" (a mounted horserider) and the first sound of the
pipe starts the share out of the candles. As from 4 p.m. the bells will
ring out and the big-headed carnival figures will appear, followed by the
horse riding "jaleo" and solemn "completes" on tribute to the apostle Sant
Bartomeu. The vigil for the saint will end with a recital by Sa Rosa
des Vents and the dance with the group Feeling.
The following day, Sant Bartomeu, the festive ceremonies will start
at 8.30 a.m. with the "alegre Diana" by the Band of Trumpets and Drums,
followed by the big-headed carnival figures, the riding through the streets,
the "jaleo" in the square of the Church, the handout of the green canes
with silver spoon and the Mass. At the end, a buffet by the "caixers" in
the Town Hall and share out of "aigua-ros" round the houses in Ferreries.
The events will continue at 8 p.m. with the children's group Sol-Élite
Gavilanes, Menorcan music by Joana Pons amb ses Guitarres, the dance with
Calipso in the Carrer Nou and with Oasis and Polaris in the Sant Bartomeu
field.
The programme will end on Monday August 25. This last day will
include the "jaleo d'ases" (donkey's fiesta) and horse racing, children's
games, dance, fireworks and finally a "sobrassada" barbecue.
