Es Mercadal is holding
the fiestas de Sant Martí at the moment, and these star the horses
and their riders, like the other patron saint festivities held during the
summer all over the island, starting with
Sant
Joan in Ciutadella.
The Festes de Sant Martí 2002 started last Thursday with the
XIX Torneig Raqueta de Plata and the
artisan
market, and will continue until Monday, July 22 with a complete programme
that includes, besides the medieval events that govern the protocol of
the fiestas (qualcada de caixers, jaleo, caragols, completes...) to be
held on on Saturday and Sunday of Sant Marti, July 20 and 21, a whole series
of cultural activities such as the prize giving "Premi d'investigació
sobre es Mercadal i Fornells 2002" (Thursday 18 at 9 p.m.), and the concerts
given in the fiestas by the Banda de Música de Montuïri, the
Ampurdan group Havana songs
Duet
and the Mallorcan group
Cap-Pela,
amongst others.
The complete programme can be consulted in
Word
format and on the page of the
Col·legi
Públic Mare de Déu del Toro of Es Mercadal an interesting
work dedicated to the
Festes
de Sant Martí can be found. Moreover there is information about
the
Fiestas
on the new web of the
Es Mercadal
Town Council.
Meanwhile, on July 27 and 28, the fourth weekend in July, according
to tradition, the festivities of
Sant
Antoni will be held in Fornells, a neighbouring town to Es Mercadal,
that belongs to the same municipality. Here too the horses and their riders
will be the protagonists.
