During the summer months, many of the Menorcan towns have markets and
street sales points where artisan and autochthonous products can be acquired.
Amongst others, particularly worth a mention are the markets at Ferreries
and Es Mercadal.
The "Mercat de Ferreries", with nearly 10 years' history, is the oldest.
It is held throughout the year, but in summer is when it has its greatest
participation, both by the public and the exhibitors, with some thirty
stalls. The rendezvous is on Saturdays, in the Plaça Espanya as
from 8.30 a.m. Different musical performances and regional dances
by the local groups Es Penell and Aires des Barranc d'Algendar also animate
the area.
The "Mercat Artesanal des
Mercadal"
also has a long history, although it started after the one at Ferreries,
the neighbouring town with which it has an agreement that permits the exchange
of exhibitors between the two weekly markets. Es Mercadal market is held
on Thursday between 7 and 10 p.m. in the Plaça del Pare Camps, only
in the summer, starting the first Thursday after Sant Joan (June 24).
Here the fair activity is also complemented with folk activities by the
groups of the federation
FEMEFOLK.
