The department of Culture of the Council of Es Castell and the direction
of the Llatzeret have organised a programme of visits to the island of
Llatzeret, that will start next June 6 and will continue throughout the
summer, until September 29. The visits will be held on Thursdays and Sundays
by boat that will leave at 10.30 and 11 a.m. from Cala Fonts and the return
will be each hour. The programme will permit visitors get to know
the facilities of Llatzeret and use the services of the restaurant and
swimming pool. The service is completely free, except for the restaurant
that costs approximately 9 €.
The island of Llatzeret, in the mouth of the port of Maó, facing
the municipality of Es Castell, was originally a peninsular but in the
XIX century was transformed in islet via the construction of an artificial
canal in the isthmus that joined it to the north coast of the port, with
a view to holding contagious patients and vessels in quarantine. At present
is has a residence administered by the Ministry of Health, base for the
Escuela de Verano de Salud Pública
held there every year.
This year is the first time that the programme of cultural visits has
been organised together with the Town Council of Es Castell. Previously
a visit to the island had only been possible by obtaining the pertinent
permission from the Ministry of Health.
