The
Govern de les Illes Balears,
in the Friday cabinet meeting, agreed to start the procedures for the declaration
as Protected Natural Areas with the classification as Natural Monument,
of the gorges Santa Ana in Ciutadella, and Algendar and Trebalúger
in Ferreries.
Until the final approval, the Department of Environment will have to
formulate the draft decrees for the declaration of natural monuments and
then account these to the institutions and owners of the mentioned gorges.
The total area they wish to protect is about 10 km2 and according to
the Department of Environment, "the objective of this declaration is to
guarantee the preservation of the extreme singularity and beauty of the
mentioned gorges and the special importance of their ecological values.
The three gorges have geomorphologic and karstic values, on the one hand,
and, thanks to their special microclimate, also flora and fauna, particularly
birds, for which they deserve special protection.
Last August, the Balearic Government declared the
Monument
Natural de Ses Fonts Ufanes de Campanet, on Mallorca, making this the
first natural area in the Balearics and Pitiüses protected by this
figure contemplated in the law
Ley
4/1989, de Conservación de los Espacios Naturales y de la Flora.
