The cova d'en Xoroi has become one of the main tourist attractions
of Cala en Porter and the most spectacular discotheque on the island of
Menorca.
In October, the Cova d'en Xoroi can still be visited, an imposing natural
cavity in the impregnable cliffs of Cala en Porter, in the municipality
of Alaior. The visiting hours and the shop hours are from 10.30 a.m. to
9 p.m. Whereas the Disco Cova d'en Xoroi opens its doors in the summer
season at 11 p.m., but in October it will only open on Friday and Saturday
nights.
From November to April, when the cave opens its doors again, the area
will remain silent and the spirit of the popular legend of the Cova d'en
Xoroi can find itself again with its mysterious world. According to the
legend, an unknown stranger who had arrived on the island, called by the
Menorcans the Xoroi the Moor, kidnapped a young girl and took her to the
cave that was his hiding place. One day, a chance snow storm covered the
area with a white blanket, and some footprints in the snow guided the neighbours
to Xoroi's home. The armed men entered, discovered that Xoroi and the young
girl had formed a family and had three children. The end of the legend
is tragic: when Xoroi and his eldest son saw that they were surrounded,
they plunged over the cliff into the sea. His companion and her other two
children were taken to Alaior, where it is said that descendents of the
couple still live.
