The callendar for the summer fiestas in Menorca continues. Last week
were the fiestas for
Sant
Llorenç in Alaior, on August 24 is Sant Bartomeu with fiestas
in Ferreries, on the 25th is the Patron Saint for Sant Lluis...
The most immediate, the "Festes de Sant Bartomeu" in Ferreries, started
a few days ago although the official start will take place on Wednesday
August 22 with the proclamation by Joan Pons Martí and Consulelo
Marquès Melià. The "Festes de Sant Bartomeu" this year, that
coincide with the commemoration of the 700 years of history of Ferreies,
have an attractive programme of activities that includes concerts, theatre,
"glossats", folkdancing and many other cultural and sports proposals.
The most outstanding and traditional part of the programme is the events
that will take place on Thursday 23 and Friday 24, that follow a strict
order starring the horses. On Thursday 23 at 12.00 h the Sant Bartomeu
flags are handed over to the "caixer sobreposat" (a mounted horserider)
and the first sound of the pipe starts the share out of the candles. As
from 4 p.m. the bells will ring out and the 'capgrossos' will appear, the
horse riding 'jaleo' and solemn 'copletes' on tribute to the apostle Sant
Bartomeu. The vigil for the saint will end with a recital by the
group Joana Pons i ses Guitarres and the dance with the group Polaris.
The following day, Sant Bartomeu, the festive ceremonies will start
at 8.30 a.m. with the 'alegre Diana' by the Band of Trumpets and Drums
and the 'cabezudos', riding through the streets, the 'jaleo' in the Plaza
de la Iglesia, the handout of the green canes with silver spoon and the
Mass. At the end, a buffet by the 'caixers' in the Town Hall and share
out of "aigua-ros" round the houses in Ferreries. The events will continue
at 8 p.m. with the children's group
Cucorba,
Menorcan music by Rosa des Vents, the dance with Calipso in the Carrer
Nou and with Oasis and Boomerang in the Sant Bartomeu field.
The programme will end on Saturday August 25. This last day will
include the 'jaleo d'ases' and horse racing, children's games, dance, fireworks
and finally a 'sobrassada barbecue'.
