First civil marriage for gays and lesbians
On April 1st 2001, at the stroke of midnight, the first same-sex couples were joined in marriage in the Amsterdam City Hall, it market the end of an almost 15-year process. The road to equal rights in personal relationships encompassed court trials, symbolic wedding registers, registered partnership and, finally, opening civil marriage to all gay and lesbian couples. At times, it looked like a long struggle, but in politics, things happen at their own pace. And no matter what, the Netherlands has made world history.
