Barceló Hotels: first hotel in China
Barceló Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement to manage a luxury hotel in Shanghai, thus becoming the first Spanish Hotel Group to operate in the People’s Republic of China.

The hotel chain of Barceló Empresas, signed a contract on the 27th of March by which it undertakes the management of the Shanghai International Convention Center & Hotel for an initial period of ten years and which, as from last Thursday, 18th of May, will be known as the Barceló Grand Hotel Shanghai.

This new five star Hotel comprises one of the most well-known landmarks of modern Shanghai. Constructed in white marble and with two large glass globes on each side representing the world, it stands beside the well-known Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower, the most famous telecommunications tower in Asia.

The hotel is owned by a public company, the Shanghai Radio, Television and Cinema Company and by Shanghai Cable Television.

One of the fundamental features of this Hotel is the Conventions and Exhibitions Center which forms part of. This was the venue of the latest Fortune Forum in 1999, which brought together the presidents of 500 of the most important companies in the world.

In October 2001, the Barceló Grand Hotel Shanghai will be the venue for the annual APEC Meeting (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) which brings together the heads of Government and Finance Ministers of more than 50 countries on both sides of the Pacific.

On the other hand, Barceló Hotels & Resorts has just signed the corresponding management contracts for five new hotels which it will immediately incorporate into its chain.

New hotels to be managed are as follows:
- Royal Mandaya Barceló Hotel, Mindanao (Filipinas)
- Barceló Punta del Este, Punta del Este (Uruguay)
- Barceló Pueblo Caribe, Isla Margarita (Venezuela)
- Barceló Bahoruco, Barahona (República Dominicana)
- Barceló Colonia Tropical, Juan Dolio (República Dominicana)

After these additions, Barceló Hotels & Resorts extends its presence to 13 countries in Europe, Asia and America, with 84 hotels, 20,320 rooms and 42,233 beds.
