This coming week, the play
"Escenes
d'una execució" by Howard Barker will reach Menorca, in the
version by
Quim Monzó and directed
by Ramon Simó. A super production by the
Teatre
Nacional de Catalunya that has been programmed as part of the Festival
Escenaris del Món and can be seen in the Teatre Principal in Maó
on Wednesday 23 at 9.30 p.m. The story is based in Venice of the
XVII century. The protagonist, Galàctia, a well known artist, carries
out a painting of the Battle of Lepanto, commissioned by the Dux Urgentino,
but contrary to the requirements of the Venetian politicians, it will reflect
all the brutality and obscenity of the battle. This is a radical and poetic
production that explains to us the function of art in society, the responsibility
of the artists and how ruling powers utilise art.
Also part of the programme of Festival Escenaris del Món, on
Wednesday 30, the play
"Nits
de reis" by William Shakespeare, will premier at the Teatre Principal
in Maó, produced by the Mallorcan company
Rafel
Oliver Produccions and directed by the Menorcan
Pitus
Fernández. The production will remain until May 2 and from 3
to 4 can be seen at the Teatre des Born in Ciutadella. "Nits de reis" is
an intricate comedy, that combines enviable poetic quality with original
music and splendid costumes.
