Due to the abundant fauna, on the Island of Menorca it is not uncommon
to find an injured animal that has been run over or has collided with varied
objects. What should one do if the animal needs help? The answer
is simple. Take to the Centre of Recovery for Wild Life of the
GOB
that is in the quarry of Alzina, in Ciutadella. It is important to
know
how
to react in these cases, and therefore the GOB, as well as giving assistance
to the injured wild animal, or in danger, carries out an important educational
campaign to make people aware of this topic. The basic advice can
be found on the
web del
Centro.
One of the latest animals that has arrived at the installation is a
purple swamp-hen (Porphyrio porphyrio). The animal had a fractured wing
and thanks to the attention received is recovering favourably. The
purple swamp-hen has a very distinctive feathing, bright blue with a red
face. It is a species that had become extinct on Menorca after the
fifties, and that lately had returned again to the humid areas such as
Son Bou and Son Saura in the north, where small chicks have also been observed.
