On Saturday, January 12, the fiestas for Sant Antoni, Patron Saint
of Menorca, will start in Ciutadella. Amongst other activities, this day
there will be the race "XIII Milla urbana" and a street party with the
participation of Sant Antoni, Els Dimonis d'Alcúdia and Xeremiers.
The day after, Sunday 13, there will be several sports activities and
a meeting of traditional folk groups at the Casino 17 de Gener with the
performances by Aires des Migjorn Gran, Castell de Sant Felip and Arrels
de Sant Joan.
The programme will continue on Wednesday 16, with the institutional
event at the Town Council, including speeches by the Major Pau Lluís
Mesquida and the historian Josep Sastre Portella, and the prize giving
of the "XVI premi d'investigació cultural Francesc de Borja Moll"
On Thursday, January 17 –Sant Antoni day and also "Diada del Poble de
Menorca"– the events will start at 11 a.m. with the celebration of the
Mass at the Cathedral, followed by the traditional procession of "Els Tres
Tocs", a very ancient celebration that commemorates the Menorcan conquer
by King Anfós, in 1287. The processions is headed by three representatives
of the City Council, the Bishop and the clergy, starting at the Cathedral
and going via the Roser until the ancient Portal d'Artrutx.
The celebrations of the Sant Antoni day will continue at midday, with
an exhibition of traditional handicraft and popular dances at the Centre
d'Artesania Molí des Comte, including the performance by the folk
group Tramuntana. There will also be a market at the Plaça de Sant
Antoni selling oranges, dates and "garballons" with music by the Agrupació
Musical. Finally, at 6.30 p.m., S'Albaida will offer a concert at the Teatre
Municipal des Born.
The programme of events will continue this year until January 20. On
Saturday 19, at 8.30 p.m. and on Sunday 20, at 8 p.m., the Teatre Municipal
des Born will hold the representation of the musical play "Menorca terra
de llum", by the Ateneu Científic, Literari i Artístic de
Maó. And on Sunday 20, amongst other activities, there will be an
equestrian show as from 10:30 p.m., at Es Caragolí of the Club Hípic
Ciutadella.
