GESA leaves Mallorca and part of Menorca without electricity

This morning GESA has left the whole of Mallorca and most of Menorca without any electricity. The breakdown occurred about 11.30 a.m. and did not affect Ibiza, and only the Ciutadella area of Menorca, where power was re-established at 1.30 p.m.

According to the Balearic Home Office, power has been re-established progressively in Palma and at 2.50 p.m. there was only 5% of the city without electricity. At the moment of writing at 3.30 p.m. there is still 30% of Mallorca without electricity.

The power cut affected principally the city of Palma where the traffic lights stopped working and several people were trapped in lifts. The break down did not affect the airport, nor hospitals nor the security corps since these have their own electrogen equipment.

The telephones of GESA were completely collapsed this morning and it was impossible to contact the firm. Neither have we been able to find any explanation about the occurrence on the company's web page. Although some of the media have informed that the breakdown was caused in a substation at Llubi, other sources doubt this information and believe that it originated in the power centre in Es Murterar.
